Blue Ridge Beef Voluntarily Recalls Blue Ridge Beef Puppy Mix Due to Salmonella Contamination

    BY

December 2nd, 2024 — Blue Ridge Beef is voluntarily recalling its Puppy Mix after being notified by the FDA that the product tested positive for Salmonella. This issue came to light after a customer reported that a litter of puppies became ill, leading to an investigation by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).

    What was recalled?

    • Product: 2 lb log of Puppy Mix
    • Lot Numbers: 08/06/N25 and 08/16/N25
    • UPC: 854298001696

The recalled products were distributed between August 6, 2024, and August 23, 2024. They were packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in retail stores across Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York State.

Lot numbers can be found stamped on the clips at the ends of the chubs/bags.

    What to do?

Consumers who have purchased this product are urged to return to the place of purchase or destroy the food in a way that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access.

Consumers may contact the company at bl*************@***oo.com or 704-873-2072 about returning the recalled product for a refund or replacement.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the product, and humans are at risk from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Recalled products should not be sold, donated, or fed to pets or other animals. To ensure safety, wash and sanitize all pet food bowls, cups, storage containers, and any surfaces exposed to the product, and thoroughly wash your hands after handling the food or related utensils.

Salmonella can affect both humans and pets. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, the infection can lead to more severe conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract issues. If you develop symptoms after contact with this product, seek medical advice immediately.

Pets infected with Salmonella may show signs like lethargy, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, vomiting, or abdominal pain, though some may only have a decreased appetite. Infected pets can also spread the infection to other animals or humans, even if they appear healthy. If your pet displays symptoms after consuming the product, consult a veterinarian promptly.

    Reporting pet food problems

The FDA encourages consumers to report complaints about pet food products electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal. Additionally, consumers can visit the SmartHub – Safety Intake Portal – Report a Product Problem (fda.gov) to obtain electronic assistance with submitting a report.

Canadians can report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
